Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, the youngest of all IITs and the only IIT in the Himalayas, has completely shifted B. Tech. students from its Mandi transit campus to its permanent campus at Kamand. This shifting was made possible by the inaugurations of new academic and hostel blocks earlier this week at Kamand.
On Thursday 23rd April, 2015, Prof. B.D. Chaudhary, Dean (Sponsored Research & Industrial Consultancy), IIT Mandi, inaugurated an academic building (the A5 block) at IIT Mandi’s Kamand campus. He mentioned that the inauguration of a building is like celebrating a new life and that the new academic block will be associated with countless memories in the coming future. The A5 block has 4 classrooms and a conference room on ground floor, a library on first floor, and research scholar’s seating and project labs on second floor. The block is to be used for teaching courses to undergraduate and graduate students. Other dignitaries gracing the occasion included: Prof. Timothy A. Gonsalves, Director; Prof. B.S. Subramanian, Dean (students), Prof. Ramesh Oruganti, Dean (academics); and, Prof. Satish Chandra Jain, Dean (I & S).

Most recently, IIT Mandi’s second year B. Tech. students moved from Mandi to Kamand. Some of these students have taken accommodation in a new hostel block, G4, at Kamand. The G4 block, a part of IIT Mandi’s Suvalsar hostel, was inaugurated on 25th April, 2015, by Prof. Subrata Ray, Distinguished Visiting Professor, IIT Mandi. Other dignitaries present on the occasion included: Prof. Timothy A. Gonsalves, Director; Prof. B.S. Subramanian, Dean (students), Prof. Ramesh Oruganti, Dean (academics); Dr. Varun Dutt, Chief Warden; and, Dr. Hari Verma, Warden, Suvalsar hostel. The new G4 block has 25 rooms across two floors and it is housing 75 second year B. Tech. students. This block has been constructed deploying the latest technology of using Light Gauge Steel Framing (LGSF) materials. The salient feature of this type of construction is that the rooms have excellent insulation, i.e., they remain cool during hot summers and warm during cold winters. The inauguration of the G4 block was followed by a high tea party, hosted by the Chief Warden. The high tea was attended by several students, faculty, and staff of the Institute.

The remaining boys and girls of the second year B. Tech. batch will reside in the G2 block and Chandrataal Annexe, respectively, at Kamand. The G2 block was inaugurated by Shri M. Natarajan Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Mandi, on 15th March, 2015 evening, following IIT Mandi’s 2nd convocation ceremony on the same day. With the moving of the second year B. Tech. students to Kamand, IIT Mandi is one of the first among the new IITs to completely shift its B. Tech. program to its permanent campus. The Institute will continue to use the academic building on its Mandi campus for faculty offices and project labs.
