DST-FIST Facility @ SBB - IIT Mandi

(Project No. SR/FST/LS-II/2022/950)

Mission

The School of Biosciences and Bioengineering aims to create next-generation academicians, scientists, and industry experts in Health, Agriculture, and the Environment. Since 2016, it has grown substantially in terms of academic activities, diverse research areas, and infrastructure. Currently, SBB is the home to a vibrant group of 12 core faculty members, several research scholars, and students. SBB strives for excellence with different academic programs at the PhD, postgraduate, and undergraduate levels to create an academic niche where state-of-the-art bioscience meets cutting-edge bioengineering technologies at IIT Mandi.

Teaching & Research Activities

The Biological Sciences discipline at IIT Mandi is motivated by the needs in the fields of human healthcare, food/agriculture, and environmental sustainability. This thrives in the development of new technologies for better disease diagnosis and management, identification, and the development of rare medicinally important molecules from various sources towards a clean and better environment. Situated in the largely agrarian and scenic central Himalayan terrain, IIT Mandi has a focus on agriculture, the environment, and human health. This discipline has initiated activities in the broader areas of biological sciences of immediate relevance to the Himalayan region with a special emphasis on health care. There is an immediate need to extend these benefits of advanced knowledge and technology to society. Also, with the advancements in technology, better healthcare regimes need to be developed. IIT Mandi has several faculties in the School of Basic Sciences with core expertise in Biological Sciences, who along with the faculty members in the other disciplines at the School of Basic Sciences and Engineering are engaged in highly interdisciplinary state-of-the-art research activities.
