The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi is located in the serene Kamand Valley, about 18 km from Mandi town. The valley is an unexplored, lush green landscape, blessed with rich floral diversity. The region is home to many important tree species such as Rhododendron (Rhododendron lepidotum), Mulberry (Morus alba), Willow (Salix alba), Blue Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia), Silver Oak (Grevillea robusta), Walnut (Juglans regia), Gulmohar (Delonix regia), Chinar (Platanus orientalis), Toona (Toona ciliata), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), and Pine (Pinus roxburghii).
In addition to these, the area also supports a wide range of medicinal plants. To conserve and showcase this biodiversity, IIT Mandi has developed the Vrindavan Botanical Garden, which features themed sections such as the Navgrah Vatika, Nakshatra Vatika, and the Butterfly Garden.

Plantation drive for creating awareness among students and the IIT fraternity
The institute also organizes regular plantation drives to raise awareness among students, staff, Faculty and the wider IIT community about the importance of greenery in mitigating pollution and protecting the environment. Below are some glimpses of the plantation drives held on the campus.
1. IIT Mandi’s Plantation Drive: 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam'
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi actively participated in the plantation drive under the Government of India’s campaign, "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam". This initiative seeks to raise environmental consciousness and encourage tree planting, particularly among youth. Faculty, staff, and students of IIT Mandi enthusiastically joined the effort, enhancing the campus’s green cover and demonstrating their collective commitment to sustainability.
About the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' Campaign
Launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on World Environment Day, 5th June 2024, the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign invites individuals to plant a tree in honor of their mothers. It beautifully symbolizes reverence for one’s mother and for Mother Earth, encouraging both environmental responsibility and emotional connection with nature.
